When the elderly, eccentric Mary Shepherd parks her delapidated van on Allan Bennett’s London driveway she continues to live there for 15 years. Allan a kind, non confrontational artist writes a play about the situation really documenting his internal conversation examining why he won’t confront her. He continually rehearses what he will say to her but he never does. The result is a heart warming relationship fraught with caring seemingly endless challenges and frustrations.

Because he is a public figure many of the traits ( confirmed by family, friends & colleagues in interviews) were in evidence in a more public forum than for many people.
James Donovan is recruited against his will by the CIA to negotiate the transfer of U-2 spy plane pilot Garry Powers back to the USA. He is driven by an internal integrity and a rule book that is the Constitution of the US. He follows his very strong belief that it is his duty ( as a lawyer/following the Constitution) that he must defend the rights of a person to hold and act on his personal beliefs even if he did not agree with the same belief structure. There is a tenacity and strength of advocacy in him that is an unshakeable quiet conviction to his belief in the Constitution. He believe in justice and goes through a great deal to make certain a man is given a fair trial. He will however break the rules and follow his own path on behalf of a young soldier others are willing to sacrifice.

Her worst recurring nightmare would be to be stranded for more than one minute without a book. She happily goes along with almost any scheme her mother devises to get her more involved with other people and her surroundings but she tries to keep to her very serious, orderly study schedule only to have it derailed by the antics of her outgoing Mom.
